About Wanaka

Lake WanakaOriginally named Pemboke, Wanaka was first surveyed in 1863. In the 1870′s the population started to increase in the area due to the timber milling in the Matukituki Villey and the use of Lake Wanaka for transport.

Tourism in Wanka started around 1867 with the opening of the first Hotel by Throdore Russell. It was a popular tourism destination from day one as the climate allowed easy access to snow and water. It was not until 1940 that Pemboke was re-named to Wanaka.
